I bought my first house in 1996 and rolled it right into the garage to again just sit there. The occasional start up and the drive around the block. I moved again in 2002 and rolled the Mustang into my shop. Yep, and there it sat. Again. After about 8 years of that, my buddy and I replaced the front and rear floor plans as they were getting a little thin and soft. While we were there, we replaced all the brakes as well. And then it sat. I moved again in 2012 and moved the car into my new shop. And then it sat.
At this point I had owned the vehicle for 25 years and drove it a whopping 24,000 miles. I decided it was time to pay somebody to help do some work on the vehicle. I had the carb rebuilt, the gas tank replaced. A new hood and left front fender due to a little rust. And then we sent it off to have it painted. I wasn't about to spend $10,000 on a paint job, but I paid enough so that it looks great. And then I replaced the upholstery, carpet, headliner, windshield, back window, put new wheels and tires on it and probably a few other things I've forgotten. Time to get back in the saddle. I drove it around that next summer a handful of times and then, yep, it sat again.
I moved one more time a few years ago parked the car in the garage. You guessed it....and there it sits. I've always enjoyed being able to tell folks that I still have my first car, and a cool car it is. But I no longer want to tinker on it, I no longer care to drive it, and its time for somebody else to love this car as much as I have for almost 37 years. While I never thought I'd sell this car, I've convinced myself the time has come.
Now, just to be clear, the car does still need some more tinkering. It would likely need the carb cleaned again. I know it needs the left rear brake line replaced from the master cylinder back to the rear axle. There are also some little oil leaks and seeping from seals from just sitting there so much.
What else is there to know....oh yeah, it is the 289 V-8 engine with the C-4 Automatic Transmission. It has power steering but does not have power brakes. Other than that, the only other cool, unique feature, is the split back bench seat. I'm told those are fairly rare. It does have a CD player in it, and if you don't know what one of those is, you might be too young to own this car. :-)
I believe I've priced this car reasonably and tried not to let the sentimental value influence me too much. $17,000 OBO.
