The Best Low Carb Keto Salmon Patties Recipe (1)

To be honest, in our house we’re not seafood lovers, but salmon is our favorite. We occasionally cook shrimp and tuna, but that’s it! I still think that we didn’t get the opportunity to eat properly cooked fish.

This summer, when we were in Spain, we had bacon-wrapped shrimp, and we loved every single bite. Bacon makes everything better.

Why This Recipe Works

  • Ultra flakey, tender , and flavorful salmon patties.
  • A favorite family recipe that’s perfect for a quick dinner.
  • Requires easy ingredients you probably have in your pantry.
  • Super quick and easy to make in less than 20 minutes.

Ingredients Salmon Patties

In this recipe, I used canned salmon out of convenience, but if you have time to bake fresh salmon, do it. The salmon cakes will taste even better with freshly baked and seasoned salmon leftovers.

To keep these salmon patties low carb, we use almond flour and shredded parmesan cheese instead of bread crumbs that are traditionally added to bind everything together.

Also, you can swap the yellow onion with red onion, and even add some chopped red bell peppers for extra color and taste.

These salmon patties are well seasoned with fresh herbs, and the fat in the parmesan will keep them tender.

If you love salmon, then this recipe is perfect for you. Here are all the ingredients you’ll need:

  • 1/2cupsour cream or full-fat Greek yogurt
  • juice from half a lemon
  • 1/2tsp salt
  • 1/4tsp black pepper

Mix all the ingredients together and serve over hot patties, if desired. You have to try it!

How to Make Salmon Patties

Making Salmon Patties is super easy because we use pre-cooked salmon, so in less than 20 minutes you have delicious low carb salmon patties to enjoy with your family.

  1. In a large bowl, flake the salmon using a fork and remove any bones.
  2. Add finely chopped onion to the bowl, followed by the rest of the ingredients.
  3. Combine the ingredients with a fork, and then use your hands to form salmon patties. I used about ¼ cup of salmon mixture for each patty.
  4. In a large pan over medium heat, fry the salmon patties until they get a nice golden color on both sides. So easy, right?
  5. Remove patties from the heat and serve with your favorite side salad and dipping sauce.

Yes, baking salmon patties is a valid option for cooking them.

Preheat the oven to 375F and place the patties onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and then sprayed with cooking spray.

Bake the patties for 20 minutes, making sure to flip them halfway, so they crisp up on both sides.

Can I Air Fry Salmon Patties?

Preheat your air fryer to 400F and place the salmon cakes in the basket in a single layer. Air fry for 8-12 minutes until golden and crispy on the edges. You can brush the salmon patties with olive oil on both side to make them even crispier.

FAQs

What can you use instead of breadcrumbs in salmon patties? ›

I like this recipe for salmon patties because it uses oatmeal instead of bread crumbs or crackers. I add lemon pepper and salt and pepper so that it has a bit more zing. Also, since I have a dairy allergy, I used rice milk in place of the milk, and fried them in olive oil with a bit of "buttery spread".

What to use to keep salmon patties from falling apart? ›

Mayonnaise. Mayonnaise will add moisture and help keep the salmon patty from falling apart.

Why are my salmon patties not sticking together? ›

Balance The Binders With The Moisture

Every salmon patty or cake recipe calls for some combination of binding ingredients. These usually include eggs, flour, breadcrumbs, cracker crumbs, ground flaxseed, and so on. Without these binders, the salmon has nothing to stick to, so you can't form patties.

Why do my salmon patties fall apart when frying? ›

If you add too much egg, for instance, or the canned fish isn't properly drained, the mixture will be too wet and the cakes will fall apart. Too many breadcrumbs, on the other hand, will make your cakes dry and crumbly.

What should I use if I don't have breadcrumbs? ›

For ¼ cup fine, dry bread crumbs, substitute any of these items:
  • ¾ cup soft bread crumbs.
  • ¼ cup panko.
  • ¼ cup cracker or pretzel crumbs.
  • ¼ cup crushed cornflakes or other unsweetened cereals.
  • ⅔ cup regular rolled oats (Use this only as a substitute for bread crumbs in meat loaf and other meat mixtures, such as burgers.

What can I use as a binder instead of eggs in salmon patties? ›

You can use wheat flour, oat flour or mashed potatoes egg substitute for binder in salmon patties. Replace each egg with 1/3 cup of flour or mashed potato.

How do you keep homemade patties from falling apart? ›

Go easy on the shaping. When you're making your burgers, try not to manhandle them too much or else you'll end up breaking the meat into smaller pieces than you have to. We recommend simply shaping the beef into a vague burger shape with the least amount handling as possible.

Why are my salmon patties so dry? ›

Overcooked Salmon Is Dry

Salmon goes from moist and silky to tough and dry when it's overcooked, even by just a minute or two.

How do you know when salmon patties are done? ›

When the salmon burger reaches 145 degrees F, it is done. – If you don't have a thermometer, check that your burger is lightly crisp on the outside and that the meat inside is pink and flaky.

What helps patties stick together? ›

The most commonly used binding agent for hamburger patties is eggs. They work well with ground meat and are easy to incorporate into the rest of your ingredients.

How do you get the fishy taste out of salmon patties? ›

Apparently, the proteins present in milk can bind to the fatty acids that have been exposed to air and give salmon its fishy odor or taste and mitigate them to be more neutral. (Fishiness is caused by the oxidation of fatty acids.)

What is the white stuff when frying salmon? ›

What Is That White Stuff Oozing Out of My Salmon While It Cooks? It's called albumin. And it lives in your salmon whether it's cooked or not, no matter where it's from, how it's raised, or how much you paid for it.

Can you eat undercooked salmon patties? ›

Note: Consuming raw or undercooked meats, poultry, seafood, shellfish, or eggs may increase your risk of foodborne illness, especially if you have a certain medical condition. The FDA recommends an internal temperature of 145°F for cooked fish.

Why is my salmon not flaky? ›

Flakiness is another sign of doneness. Use a salad fork or the tip of a paring knife to test whether the top of the fish flakes apart easily. It's done cooking if it's flakey. If salmon is hard to the touch and doesn't flake when testing it with a utensil or finger, it needs to cook a little longer.

What can I use instead of breadcrumb for fish? ›

Cornflakes are classic breading material, but any grain-based, not-too-sweet cereal works great as a stand-in for traditional breadcrumbs. Corn or rice Chex, Wheaties, and even savory granola and oat-based cereals would make a great crust for your chicken breast or fish filets.

What can I use instead of panko in fish cakes? ›

Corn chips, tortilla chips, rice chips, and even veggie chips can all be substituted for panko once crushed. Some might add extra seasoning to your dish as well. While potato chips can work as a crunchy topping for a casserole, crafty home cooks can also use them in other dishes.

Can I use flour instead of breadcrumbs for fish? ›

Fish fillets dusted with flour and cooked until crispy makes a simple yet satisfying dish. The flour browns nicely and creates just the barest hint of a crust on the fish.
