During the 1940s, Lens hitchiked across the country, staging sit-ins, organizing walk -outs and leading strikes in Detroit, Washington and New York. During the 1950s, his articles denouncing McCarthyism and the Cold War brought him national attention.

Lens wrote more than 20 books, was a contributor to Progressive magazine since the early 1950s and lectured on foreign affairs and labor history at several universities. Paul Nason WINCHESTER, Mass. (AP) Paul E. Nason, executive sports editor at The Boston Globe for 33 years and an expert on the Boston Marathon, died Thursday of a heart attack at age 77. Nason began working at the Globe as a copy boy and became sports editor and columnist in 1942.

He covered the race for 50 years, worked for the Globe from 1927 until 1974. After retiring as sports editor, Nason continued writing about the marathon and in 1982 achieved his goal of covering the event for half a century. Alan Rembaum PASADENA, Calif. (AP) Alan Rembaum, an authority on polymer chemistry who was awarded 52 patents in 24 years a researcher at Jet Propulsion Laboratory, died June 12. He was 70.

Rembaum's work involved using microscopic latex particles to seek out and separate cancer cells from normal cells, providing a new form of cancer therapy. His team of researchers at JPL developed the solid-state lithium-iodine battery which is widely used in heart-regulating pacemakers. Rembaum was recently awarded the NASA Career Award for his scientific and technological achievements. He retired from JPL in 1985. Shultz: Strife May Rule Out S.

Africa Accord ELMENDORF AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska (AP) Secretary of State George Shultz said Friday he fears the continuing state of emergency in South Africa will kill hopes of a peaceful settlement and then, "all there is left is confrontation." "I regard the state emergency and the control of to information about what is going on as major backward step, Shultz said. "I hope it doesn't lead to a kind of feeling of hopelessness and that all there is left i is confrontation." He said the Reagan administration would continue to press for reforms in South Africa, but repeated the belief that ordering a halt to U.S.-South African economic relations would be "a copout." The remarks were Shultz' first on South Africa since the House this week passed a sweeping bill that would require total U.S. disinvestment in South 1 Africa. Shultz made the comments to reporters aboard his Air Force jet as he embarked on a 10-day trip to five Asian countries Hong Kong, Singapore, Brunei, Palau and the Philippines. Truck Driver Thrown From Cab, Killed OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A Calumet truck driver was thrown from his cab and killed Friday when his truck jack-knifed on Interstate 40, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported. Marvin H. Stokes, 60, was pronounced dead on arrival at an Oklahoma City hospital, troopers said. The highway patrol said Stokes' truck jack-knifed and ran into a retaining wall after its brakes locked in slow traffic at the Interstate 44 junction.

Troopers said Stokes' door flew open and the man was ejected, landing 30 feet below on the center median of Interstate 44. (AP) An 81-year-old woman from Mountain Home, and her daughter were among the passengers aboard an airplane that crashed over the Grand Canyon after it collided with a helicopter earlier this week, authorities say. The aerial tour company involved in the collision resumed flights over the Grand Canyon on Friday as federal investigators prepared to reconstruct the tragedy that claimed 25 lives. Eight of the 19 available seats were occupied on the first flight of Grand Canyon Airlines' DeHavilland Twin Otter, the same type of plane that collided with a helicopter on Wednesday, Grand Canyon Airlines customer service representative Kirby Lowe said. Lowe said passengers were booked on each of Friday's other hourly flights.

He added that the company's pilots had expressed no apprehension about resuming operations. Meanwhile, investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration prepared to collect evidence from the crash site on Saturday. Two of the five aboard the helicopter were identified as pilot John Thybony of Tusayan and Henrieta Pearl of Lansing, who had taken the scenic flight as part of celebrating her 39th birthday while her mother, Florence Pearl, 75, remained behind. Authorities said the other three helicopter passengers were West Germans. In addition to Ms.

Goss and Mrs. Whittenburg, the U.S. citizens among the victims aboard the airplane were identified as as pilots Bruce Grubb James Ingraham, both 27 and of Grand Canyon; and Marcus Christian, 52, and his wife Katrina, both of Brewton, Ala. Other victims aboard the plane included Heinz Schlegel, 27, and his wife Beatrix, also 27, of Zurich, Switzerland, and Lorraine Meissner, 50, of Capetown, South Africa, deputies said. Sequoyah DA Disqualified From Hearing World's Own Service SALLISAW Associate District Judge Bruce Sewell disqualified the Sequoyah County District Attorney's office from prosecuting a deputy sheriff for perjury during a preliminary hearing here Friday.

The hearing, which began Monday, will be continued July 11. The attorney general's office will prosecute the case. Sewell, of Wagoner County, is presiding over the hearing after Sequoyah County judges disqualified themselves because of their working relationship with the deputy, Wade Stovall. Stovall was indicted May 5 during grand jury proceedings in Sequoyah County. The perjury charge stemmed from an arrest incident earlier in the year when a Gore police officer arrested a man and allegedly turned the prisoner over to Stovall for transport to the county jail.

Stovall told the grand jury that the arrested man was never in his custody. Authorities said the man who had been arrested by the Gore officer returned to his home but surrendered to authorities two days later on the advice of his attorney. Defense attorney Jim Jones of Sallisaw told the court Friday he intended to call Sequoyah County District Attorney Gerald Hunter as a witness. Sequoyah County Sheriff Sam Lockhart says he believes the prisoner was never turned over to the deputy. Prisoner Found Dead in Cell World's Own Service MIAMI, Okla.

Authorities investigating the death of his an are prisoner who was found in Jail the Ottawa County here early Friday. The dead prisoner was identified as Danny Eugene Webb, 42, of Joplin, Mo. Ottawa County Undersheriff Art Rhine said Webb, who was alone in a cell, had been arrested on a public drunkenness charge at 7:55 p.m. Thursday by an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper on the Will Rogers Turnpike. Rhine said Webb was alive at 1:30 a.m.
