The Week Ahead in Beer: Old man winter comes knocking (2024)

Greetings New Mexico craft beer lovers, this is E-Rock back to bring you this installment of The Week Ahead in Beer. This column is hand-crafted to keep you up to date on all of the seasonal beers, news, and events served up at breweries and tap rooms in New Mexico.

Beer festival season is largely behind us, and with it went the warm weather. But that doesn’t mean beer drinking at your favorite breweries have to end. Duel has a newly winterized patio complete with a covered tent, as does Kaktus. Marble also bought a chiminea for the Downtown pub, so look for some wood burning warmth on the patio once the weather turns cold again.Tractor’s patio is also covered and heated to keep you warm while you drink.

La Cumbre will be keeping you warm from the inside out. Every Friday from here on through the spring (at least), they will be tapping a new keg of real ale that has aged on whole leaf hops. The beer will change, but expect many appearances from the highly regarded Elevated IPA. The hop varieties will change every week allowing the La Cumbre faithful to try the vast array of aromas that are contributed by dry hops. They have done this twice now and the cask has sold out in a couple of hours, so get there early.

Right now in the Duke City, the Il Vicino Canteen will be tapping Day of the Dead, a Belgian Dark Strong aged in Bourbon barrels, on Friday. On Wednesday, the Canteen will have Bravo IPA on cask, and they will be featuring the Topaz IPA on cask this Saturday. Tractor is now serving their new Jack The Sipper (7.8% ABV) and Double Almanac IPA.

In the City Different, Blue Corn will be tapping their Rye Lager this weekend. Duel is currently offering their London Porter and German Dunkel on tap. I’m told the London Porter is especially tasty.

That is just a small sample of what is going on in the Land of Enchantment. Continue reading for all the news that is fit to blog for the week of Oct. 28.

To break down each “capsule,” I listed the brewery (with Web page linked), its phone number and hours of operation. Under “Beers” are the new or seasonal beers on tap for this week.

ABQ Brew Pub — (505) 884-1116

(Mon–Thurs 11 a.m.–midnight, Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–2 a.m., Sunday 10 a.m.–midnight)

Beers: Sierra Blanca Oktoberfest. Stoutmeister and Brandon had this at Son of Septemberfest. While Stoutmeister thought it was fine, Brandon thought it was missing something flavor-wise. Try it for yourselves and see what you think. Several times a year ABP serves up the latest creation by local brewing hero and winner of the Samuel Adams Longshot competition, Ben Miller, or seasonal releases by Monks Brewing.

Back Alley Draft House — 766-6973 (NYPD)

(Hours 4 p.m.-11 p.m. daily)

Beers: White Ryeno, Red Ale, Belgian White, IPA, Imperial Russian Stout. The White Ryeno, one of my personal favorites, is an intriguing hybrid of the standard rye and Belgian white styles. The Red Ale is the newest entry on BADH’s homemade lineup. BADH is now offering La Cumbre’s Witch’s Tit and Bosque Brewing’s Cumulus Wheat IPA on tap.

Events: Celebrate Dollar off Tuesdays on your favorite beers. Industry people always get a dollar off; show your server certificate or some other proof that you work in the crazy restaurant/bar industry. (Kitchen peeps TOO!)

Blue Corn Brewery — (505) 438-1800

(Daily 11 a.m.–10 p.m.)

Beers: Rye Lager, Chocolate Porter, Columbus (Red). Blue Corn will be tapping the Rye Lager this weekend. Blue Corn’s new red ale is hopped with Columbus hops, of course. Also, the Gold Medal Stout and End of the Trail Brown Ale are always on tap. Those two beers both earned silver medals at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival.

Blue Heron Brewery — (505) 579-9188

(Sun-Tues noon–6 p.m., Wed-Sat 10 a.m.–8 p.m.)

Beers: White Water Wheat, La Llorona Scottish Ale, Amber’s Folly Amber Ale, Tarantula Trek Red Ale, Lava Rock Pale Ale. Shilling and Stoutmeister consider the La Llorona Scottish Ale to be one of the best beers brewed anywhere on Planet Earth. Yup, the whole darned planet. It is also available in bombers, in case you’re driving by but don’t have time to sit down with a pint. Blue Heron also has Amber’s Folly Amber Ale, Tarantula Trek Red Ale, and Lava Rock Pale Ale in bottles.

Bosque Brewing Company — (505) 750-7596

(Mon–Thurs 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.-11 p.m., Sun noon-8 p.m.)

Beers: Pale Ryder, Mellow Brit, Oatmeal Stout, Engaano Hefeweizen. Not surprisingly, Stoutmeister gives thumbs up to the Oatmeal Stout, which he described as “big and bold, almost like a hybrid of a dry stout and an oatmeal. It’s not for wimps.”

News: Bosque has a new happy hour running from 4-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and all day on Sunday. Look for a revamped menu and get $1 off your favorite pints.

Broken Bottle Brewery — (505) 890-8777

(Mon–Fri 4 p.m.–midnight, Sat noon–midnight, Sun noon–10 p.m.)

Beers: Peculiar Pumpkin Porter, El Campeon, Nacho Brau, Oktoberfest, Debacle Pumpkin Ale. El Campeon is a light American ale. Nacho Brau might rank as Franz Solo’s favorite seasonal beer in ABQ. The two varieties of pumpkin ale cover the darker and lighter ends of the spectrum.

News: B3 is currently working on a new batch of Tom Selleck Ale.

Events: B3 has $3 beers every Tuesday from open to close. On Wednesday, B3 will be hosting their open mic from 8-10 p.m., with signups starting at 7:30 p.m. Check out B3’s karaoke night every Thursday starting at 8 p.m.

Cazuela’s Seafood & Mexican Grill — (505) 994-9364

(Open daily 8 a.m.-10 p.m.)

Beers: Cabrocito (Pale Ale), Papa Cabra (Double IPA), Acapulco Red, Panama Red, Acapulco Gold (Mexican Lager) (5.2% ABV), Hefe Weizen (5.5% ABV), Robusto Porter (5.9% ABV), Chupacabra IPA (7.2% ABV), Pastizal Oatmeal Stout (5.5% ABV), Piedra del Fuego Stoned Cream Ale (5.0% ABV), ESB (5.2%). First there was the Chupacabra IPA, then Papa Cabra Double IPA, and now Cazuela’s is pleased to announce the arrival of the newest addition to the Cabra family, the Cabrocito Pale Ale. Try them all. Stoutmeister and I had a chance to sample the Piedra del Fuego Stoned Cream Ale. According to Cazuela’s menu: “This cream ale uses red-hot stones to super caramelize the sugars, creating a nutty, toffee-like flavor.” Brandon tried Panama Red at NM Brew Fest and recommends this slightly hoppy red ale.

News: Cazuela’s will have an Oatmeal Stout on tap soon.

Events: Cazuela’a now features a live guitarist every Friday.

Chama River Brewing Company — (505) 342-1800

(Sun–Thurs 11 a.m.–11 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight)

Beers: Punkin Drublic (pumpkin spiced ale), Porter for Pyros (6.1% ABV, 40 IBU), One Fell Swoop, Hop Slap IPA (7.2% ABV, 110 IBU, $5.25 pints), Summer Ale (5.4% ABV, 28 IBU). Chama had this to say about One Fell Swoop: “This experimental pale ale was created by using a simple malt recipe and handfuls of every hop we have in inventory, 14 varieties in all, which forms a complex yet satisfying and flavorful beer.” (6.2% ABV, 55IBU) Three of us in the Crew found this year’s batch of Punkin Drublic to be an improvement on the overly-spicy batches of years past.

News: Mondays all summer, Chama is offering their Brew Club Members half off an entree when one entree of greater or equal value is purchased. They also offer half-priced bottles of wine from their glass list all day Monday.

Comanche Creek Brewing Company — (575) 377-2337

(Wed-Sat noon–6 p.m.)

Beers: Touch-Me-Not IPA, Deadman Pale Ale, Homestead Amber Ale. According to Comanche Creek’s website: “Touch-Me-Not IPA is a tantalizing American sytle IPA flavored with Chinook, Centennial and Cascade hops. This bold IPA is named for the majestic mountain that overlooks our brewery!” Homestead Amber Ale was on hand when Stoutmeister and I visited Comanche Creek last year. The Homestead is often bottled and served at establishments in the Eagle Nest/Angel Fire area.

Duel Brewing Company — (505) 474-5301

(Sun 11 a.m.–8 p.m., Mon–Tues 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Wed–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight)

Beers: London Porter, German Dunkel, Titian (Belgian Golden Strong Ale, 8.2% ABV), Grunewald (imperial porter, 12% ABV), Dark Ryder (Belgian strong dark ale, 11% ABV), Bad Amber (Belgian amber, 6% ABV), Duchamp Sour Wit, Fiction IPA, Non-Fiction Pale Ale. Duel is currently offering their London Porter and German Dunkel on tap. I’m told the London Porter is especially tasty. Duchamp is a Belgian-style sour wit with lots of citrus punch (5% ABV). Duel has solidified their regular beer rotation, which includes Titian, Grunewald, Dark Ryder, Bad Amber, Duchamp Sour Wit, Fiction IPA, and Non-Fiction Pale Ale. Therefore, if there is a temporary outage in any of these beers, they will be back on tap soon. Stoutmeister and Franz Solo reviewed most of Duel’s beers in a recent visit to Santa Fe.

News: Duel is now brewing a Belgian-Style Scottish Ale that will be around 4.0-percent ABV. It has the working title of “Empiricist.” Their “Goya” Stout will be going on tap in December. It will have the hearty ABV of 13.5 percent.

Duel has a new winterized patio covered by a tent, so now you can enjoy pint on the patio any time of year.

Events: Duel will have live music provided by the Ramblers on Nov. 17 from noon to 3 p.m.

Eske’s Brew Pub — (575) 758-1517

(Mon–Thurs 4 p.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sun noon-10 p.m.)

Beers: Rio Red Ale, Naked Apricot Ale, Green Chile IPA, Chemist Ale, Seco Stout, Blonde Betty. The Green Chile IPA got a big write-up in the Albuquerque Journal‘s revamped Friday entertainment section recently. The Chemist Ale is one of the few (perhaps only) gluten-free beer brewed in New Mexico.

High Desert Brewing Company — (575) 525-6752

(Mon–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight, Sun noon-10 p.m.)

Beers: Extra Special Bitter, Anniversary IPA, Brown Ale, Wheat Ale, Peach Wheat, Fresh Hop IPA, Barley Wine, Porter, Stout, Black IPA, Dark Bock. The Anniversary IPA, Porter, Stout, and Black IPA are the newest beers on tap. High Desert Brewing Company is located at 1201 W. Hadley Ave. in Las Cruces.

Il Vicino Brewing Canteen — (505) 881-2737

(Sun–Thurs noon–10 p.m., Fri–Sat noon–midnight)

Beers: Day of the Dead (Belgian Dark Strong), Helles Bock, Face First Pale Ale, Irish Red, Iggy Gourd Pumpkin (on nitro), Elsa’s Double IPA (8.5% ABV, 100+++ IBU, 10 oz. pours), Dark American Lager, Groping Gnome IPA. The Canteen will be tapping Day of the Dead, a Belgian Dark Strong aged in Bourbon barrels, on Friday. Face First Pale Ale was brewed by Il Vicino’s assistant GM David Facey. Stoutmeister said it has a hoppy beginning and a smooth, malty finish. The Irish Red is a recurring favorite at the Canteen. Stoutmeister gives thumbs up to the Iggy Gourd, which can only be consumed at the Canteen as it can’t be put in growlers due to nitro, and the new Helles Bock, a sweet blast of malty goodness.

Cask: On Wednesday, the Canteen will have Bravo IPA on cask, and they will be featuring the Topaz IPA on cask this Saturday.

News: Marzen will be on tap as soon as one of the other beers currently on tap is sold out.

Congratulations to Il Vicino for winning a gold medal at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival. IV brought home the gold in the coffee beer category for Panama Joe’s Coffee Stout. This beer should be back on tap in the coming weeks.

Kaktus Brewing— (505) 379-5072

(Hours Mon-Thu 11:30-8, Fri-Sun 11:30-10)

Beers: Green Bottle Lager, IPA, ESB, Pale Ale, Hefeweizen, Stout, American Wheat, Pumpkin Dunkel. Located at 471 South Hill Road in Bernalillo, Kaktus is the state’s newest brewery. It is a small, casual place, similar to Blue Heron in appearance and comfort factor. We already did a review of Kaktus and Stoutmeister highly recommends the ESB. The ABQ Craft Beer Drinkers Group visited Kaktus recently and Stoutmeister went along for the fun. He enjoyed the Stout (of course) and the Pumpkin Dunkel. The ESB is nearing the end of its run. Kaktus owner Dana Koller said fans can expect the nanobrewery to go through its most popular styles quickly, though they will always have something new and exciting available as a replacement.

La Cumbre Brewing — (505) 872-0225

(Open every day at noon)

Beers: Dunkelweizen, Pater’s Pale, Like Mother Like Daughter (Session Pale Ale), Hoppy & Weiss, Hell Froze Over, Witch’s Tit. Witch’s Tit proved itself the best pumpkin beer in ABQ in a mini-beer battle of pumpkin ales. The Pater’s Pale is a Belgian-style pale ale, which packs less punch (4.7% ABV) but plenty of flavor. Like Mother Like Daughter combines Simcoe and Mosaic hops.

Cask: La Cumbre is planning a new cask tapping every Friday. From here on through the spring (at least) they will be tapping a new keg of real ale that has aged on whole leaf hops.

Marble Brewery — (505) 243-2739

(Mon–Sat 1 p.m.–midnight, Sun 1 p.m.–10:30 p.m.)

Beers: Crystal Belgique, Classic Pumpkin Ale, Pumpkin Noire, Lambert’s Pale Ale, Double IPA, Double White, Red Light Lager, Thunder from Dortmunder, India Lite. The new India Lite checks in at just 3.8-percent ABV. It was inspired by Marble’s recent trip to meet the folks at England’s Marble Brewery and their penchant for very low-ABV beers brewed in the classic English style, though they made it with Southern Passion hops from South Africa.

Cask: Check out Marble’s cask (a.k.a. “real” ale) selection on tap every Friday at the Downtown Pub.

News: Watch for the Stout Americano, brewed for GABF, to be on tap in the near future. Also, Marble’s Double White will return in about a week.

Speaking of GABF, congratulations to Marble on winning silver for its Pilsner, while Thunder from Dortmunder brought back a bronze medal.

Marble also bought a chiminea for the patio today, so look for some wood burning warmth on the patio once the weather turns cold again.

Events: Tonight, Marble will be having a pumpkin carving contest for customers and employees. Wagner’s Farms is bringing a truck of pumpkins for people to purchase, so folks just need to bring their own carving tools. They’ll have prizes for the best designs.

Marble will have a beer dinner with Vinaigrette on Nov. 6 and with Farina Alto on Nov. 11. The Vinaigrette Dinner will be casual with open seating. The Farina Alto one will feature five courses and include house cured meats, big beers, and local and seasonal ingredients.

Mimbres Valley Brewing Company — (575) 544-2739 (Deming)

(Deming Brewery Hours: Mon–Fri 11 a.m.–8 p.m., Sat 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Sun closed)

(Las Cruces Taproom Hours: Mon–Sat noon–midnight, Sun noon–9 p.m.,)

Beers: Liquid Nap, Belgian Wit, Silver Spike IPA, Beer Goggles, America Pilsner, New England Hard Cider. Liquid Nap is a Belgian Style Tripel. While being a strong beer, it is sneaky smooth. Hard Ciders have grown increasingly popular in recent years, yet they are still pretty hard to find on-tap. The MVB Hard Cider is brewed with apples, brown sugar, and honey and has a high ABV of 8 percent. Because of the high alcohol content, the Hard Cider is served in 10-ounce glasses only. This dry cider is different from most other ciders. Mimbres Valley has a brewery in Deming and a taproom in Las Cruces. Both locations feature $7 tasting flights, and both locations carry the brews listed above.

New Mexico Craft Brewing Co. — (505) 426-6079

(Sun–Thurs 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight)

Beers: AIPA, Strong Ale, Oatmeal Stout. NMCBC has a brewery in Las Vegas.

News: NMCBC picked wild hops in Gallinas Canyon, and they are brewing them in a wet-n-wild hopped ale that proved to be a huge hit at Hopfest last weekend. They have a wide range of growler fills going on at the brewery including AIPA, Strong, and Oatmeal Stout. Also, NMCBC is no longer selling at the Sandbar.

Nexus Brewery — (505) 242-4100

(Sun–Thurs 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–midnight)

Beers: Equinox (pumpkin ale), Chocolate Porter, Imperial Cream, Brown, Beam Me Up Scottish, American Amber Ale. Nexus’ English-style Brown is a little more sweet than nutty on the brown ale spectrum. Beware the Beam Me Up, which checks in at a hefty 11.2-percent ABV. Franz Solo and Stoutmeister enjoyed that one during NFL games on a recent Sunday.

Cask: Nexus is now serving Equinox on cask.

Events: Nexus serves up Happy Hour All Day on Tuesday featuring $3 pints. Also on Tuesday, Nexus will be hosting their comedy open mic, Young Dumb and Full of Comedy, starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Sun Room. They also have Ladies Night on Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. featuring $3 pints for the ladies.

Roosevelt Brewing — (575) 226-2739

(Sun 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Mon closed, Tues–Thurs 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–10 p.m.)

Beers: Eleanor’s Blonde Ale (5.5% ABV, 21 IBU), Portales Pale Ale (5.5% ABV, 45 IBU), Clovis Point IPA, Dirt Town Brown Ale (4.0% ABV, 23 IBU), Happy Heifer Hefeweizen (4.9% ABV, 17 IBU), Big Stick Stout, Cole Espresso Porter. Roosevelt Brewing is located at 201 S. Main Street in Portales. Our own Porter Pounder stopped by while working on a film crew that was shooting in Portales. We will post his review this week.

Events: Wednesday night is Open Mic Night at Roosevelt Brewing.

Sandia Chile Grill — (505) 798-1970

(Mon–Sat 8 a.m.–8 p.m., Sun 8 a.m.–6 p.m.)

Beers: Rio Negro Milk Stout (7.6% ABV), Barb’s Barrel Hefeweisen (5.5% ABV), Gold Rush Pilsen (6.8% ABV). The current batch of Rio Negro Milk Stout offers up a unique hybrid of the creamy milk stout and more of an Irish dry stout. And a big welcome back to the Gold Rush, a medal winner at the New Mexico Cup earlier this year.

News: New batches of Smooth Move Amber and Rattlesnake IPA should be back on tap soon.

Sandia Chile Grill will be helping Cottonwood Winery and Brewery open their first brewery in Artesia. They will be open for business soon.

Santa Fe Brewing Company — (505) 424-3333

(Mon–Sat 11 a.m.–10 p.m., closed on Sunday)

Beers: Pumpkin Ale, Saison ’88, Oktoberfest, 1,000 Duck Sized Horses. SFBC’s Oktoberfest, one of my personal favorites, is back on tap. The Saison ’88 was brewed in honor of SFBC’s 25th anniversary. It is also available for sale in cans just about everywhere you can find SFBC products. The taproom currently features the creatively-named sour 1,000 Duck Sized Horses. It is not a large batch, so stop by soon to try it.

Events: $1 Off Growler Refills in the Tasting Room on Mondays. $2 Tuesdays at the Eldorado Taphouse. On Wednesday, there is a $2 Pint Special in the SFBC Tasting Room, and the Sangre de Cristo Craft Brewers’ Meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Tasting Room as well. On Thursday, there will be $1 Off Growler Refills at the Eldorado Taphouse.

News: The Babes in Brewland brewed on SFBC’s small batch system recently. Their beer should be ready in a few weeks. And yes, ladies, we’ll come try it.

Also, this Saturday is Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day at SFBC. There are usually a dozen or so stations where people can learn all about homebrewing. It will be going on all day.

Second Street Brewery — (505) 989-3278 (Railyard), (505) 982-3030 (original location)

(Mon–Thurs 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–11 p.m., Sunday noon-9 p.m.)

Beers: Belgian Witbier, St. George IPA, Oktoberfest, Cascade Pilsner, Simcoe Pale Ale, Altbier, Cherrywood Smoked Imperial Porter. In honor of Oktoberfest, Second Street has brewed up three beers that fit the season in the Oktoberfest, Altbier, and Rauchbier, though the latter was not available to Stoutmeister and Franz Solo when they visited recently. The two of them did do a comprehensive review of all of Second Street’s current regular and seasonal offerings.

News: Second Street brought home a gold medal from GABF for Rod’s Steam Bitter. Hopefully this beer will be back on tap before long.

Taos Ale House — (575) 758-5522

(Mon–Fri 4 p.m.-10 p.m., Sat noon-10 p.m., Sunday noon-8 p.m.)

Beers: Weisenberg (Light American Wheat), Simple Porter, Dirty Brown, Mogul Imperial IPA. Mogul Imperial IPA is a local favorite and is still on tap. This IPA has a sweet, piney flavor. Shilling and Stoutmeister loved the nutty flavor of the Dirty Brown when they tried it earlier this summer. Last year’s batch of the Simple Porter, served at Hopfest, was excellent as well. The Weisenberg is named after, you guessed it, Walter White’s alter ego on Breaking Bad. This state loves that show.

News: TAH is currently brewing the Curcurbita Imperial Pumpkin. This bad boy should be ready soon. Also on the docket is a Citra Pale Ale that was hugely popular last year. It should be on tap in a few weeks.

In some good news, TAH recently won the People’s Choice award for best beer at the recent Rotary International Chile Challenge and Beer Fest.

Taos Mesa Brewing — (575) 758-1900

(Daily 11 a.m. – close)

Beers: Lunch Pale Ale, Hopper, Marzen, Kolsch 45, The Rainy Day IPA, Crosseye Fresh Hop Rye. We’re still going to include Taos Mesa in our listings, even if they won’t respond to our emails and phone calls. So from their Facebook page: “The Rainy Day IPA (7.6% ABV, 80 IBU…This forward ale offers a bouquet of hops from both England and America. The light straw color is indicative of its light malt profile, allowing for a bigger hop experience. We’re also featuring our Crosseye Fresh Hop Rye (7.2% ABV, 100 IBU…..This hop forward ale uses local barley and rye from Colorado Malting Company in Alamosa, CO, and New Mexico Native hops from Amalia to create our annual fresh hop rye. Balanced malt and bitterness give way to subtle flavor profiles of the fresh hops—–only 8 hours from harvest to kettle! Grassy, piney, and citrus aromas abound from the late wet hop addition. Toast the season and The Valley!”

Three Rivers Brewery — (505) 325-6605

Beers: India Pale Ale, Papa Bear’s Golden Honey Ale, 21st Amendment Pale Ale, Red Apple Flyer Cider, Leroy Brown (X-Beer), Orchard Street Raspberry Wheat, Oktoberfest Lager, Bare Naked Aggie Wheat Ale, 3 Rivers Kolsch, 3 Rivers Scottish Ale, Arroyo Amber Ale, Baltic Porter. The Arroyo Amber Ale (5.0% ABV) is the local favorite. It is copper-red in color, medium bodied, and is brewed with caramel malt with a nice hop balance. The newest beers on tap include the 21st Amendment Pale Ale (4.9% ABV), which uses Amarillo and Cascade hops; the Leroy Brown (7.4% ABV), a bold brown ale; the Orchard Street Raspberry Wheat (4.9% ABV); the Oktoberfest (4.8% ABV); and the Baltic Porter (5.9% ABV).

Cask: Three Rivers is now featuring the S.M.A.S.H. – EPA and Simcoe Amber on cask. Next up will be the Thai Dragon Pepper Kolsch.

Tractor Brewing Company — (505) 433-5654 (Nob Hill Tap Room)

(The tap room is open Monday-Wednesday 3 p.m. to midnight, Thursday 3 p.m. to 2 a.m., Friday-Saturday 1 p.m. to 2 a.m., Sunday 1 p.m. to midnight)

Beers: Jack The Sipper (7.8% ABV), Double Almanac IPA(8.0 % ABV), Pilsner (6.8% ABV), Tractoberfest (6.5% ABV), Berry Cider (8.0% ABV). Beer Farmer, Tractor’s latest insider email update, described Jack The Sipper. “This beer is a brown ale which has 440 pounds of real pumpkin and is spiced with Allspice, ginger, cloves and cinnamon. It’s a bite of spicy pumpkin pie that finishes with just a hint of pumpkin flavor.”

News: Tractor’s IPA and Farmer’s Tan Red Ale are now for sale in bottles. Six-packs can be purchased at area liquor establishments, with 13 in the Albuquerque metro area including Jubilation, and now 160 locations statewide.

Turtle Mountain Brewing Company — (505) 994-9497

(Kitchen hours: Mon–Tues 11 a.m.-8:30 p.m., Wed–Thurs 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m., Sun 10:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Reminder: TMBC closes early when business dictates. Please call.)

Beers: Steam Ale, Hybrid IPA, Summer Scotch, Cabo Lager, Red Rye, P&B Brown, Genesis IPA, Gluten Free Amber, American Wheat, Maduro Stout, 2013 Harvest Ale. TMBC’s website had this to say about the Hybrid IPA, “This American I.P.A. brings you the best of both from our previous India Pale Ales. We combined two already fantastic recipes (TMBC and Independence) to bring you this citrusy & crisp I.P.A. A double dry-hop with an assortment of hops keeps this beer bountifully bitter.” (OG 1.060, BU 75, ABV 6.3%) From TMBC’s Facebook page: “In our continuing effort to provide new offerings for those who are gluten intolerant, Turtle Mountain is putting on tap today our newest creation, creatively called Gluten Free Amber. Using an enzyme from White Labs that removes gluten from the brewing process, Mark and Bill crafted up an American Amber ale hopped with Cascades that we think tastes much better than those beers brewed with sorghum. White Labs did an analysis of the finished product for us, and it came in a 10.4 PPM of gluten, which is about half of the FDA’s guideline of 20 PPM to be considered gluten free. Come in and try and pint and let us know what you think. We would appreciate the feedback.”

News: TMBC is opening at 10:30 on Sundays as opposed to 11 a.m. for the hardcore football fans.

Cask: TMBC is currently featuring the 2013 Harvest Ale, which is made with Mosaic hops, on cask.

The Wellhead — (575) 746-0640

Beers: Wellhead Pale Ale (5.3% ABV), Roughneck Red Ale (4.8% ABV), Roustabout Porter (4.8% ABV), Cisco Canyon Blonde, Indian Basin Wheat. The Wellhead is located in Artesia. The Roustabout Porter is available in the summer months replacing the stout. The brown-colored porter was originally developed in the 18th century for the working class or ‘porters’ of London. The malt and hop ingredients are simple and well-balanced. The Roughneck Red is as sweet malty Irish Red ale. The Chinook, Cascade, and Mount Hood hops create a wonderful aroma and flavor combination. Try this microbrew with spicy dishes or steak and the turtle cheesecake dessert.
